Courses run from March-September and include exclusive access to the remote coastline of the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the Gangalidda & Garawa People.
Learning objectives
- mosaic burning techniques, using fire to manage pasture, seasonal burning and the importance of monitoring burn frequency and intensity
- the conduct of fauna and flora surveys for biodiversity
- avoidance of sacred sites when burning
- the development of fire management plans
- best practice guidelines for Aboriginal community engagement and adherence to cultural protocols
Participants also have the opportunity to hear traditional stories, try bush food and experience traditional fishing and hunting.
Your facilitators
Our courses are facilitated by our experienced and professional staff and led by Gangalidda & Garawa Traditional Owners with knowledge of traditional fire practice.
Location, meals and accommodation
All our courses are held at the Jigija Indigenous Fire Training School located in the southern Gulf of Queensland on the traditional country of the Gangalidda People.
Participants can join the school from Burketown.
Participants must be prepared to camp in tents, with basic shared shower and bathroom facilities. Pre and post course accommodation is available in Burketown. We use traditional open fire and camp oven cooking. We do our best to source fresh food and provide healthy meals throughout the course.
Customised courses also from 4-6 days duration for large groups available on request.

A mindset needed more widely
This should be rolled out more widely across GRFS. Extremely useful to change thinking from simply considering "Fuel" to reduce towards understanding the connectedness of the ecosystem to the fuels. A mindset needed more widely across QRFS.
